The city of Lincoln was founded in 1867 and has served as the State Capitol ever since. The city was named after our nation's 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln originated as the town of Lancaster with approximately 30 residents. In 1869, Lincoln began to experience explosive growth with the arrival of The Burlington Railroad and The University of Nebraska.

As Lincoln grew, several other colleges and universities began to spring up in the area. Townships were eventually built around these schools, and in time, became part of Lincoln. Higher education has always been an integral part of Lincoln's history and growth.

The population continued to expand in the latter part of the 19th Century as Lincoln became a hub for State Government, homesteading, education, agriculture and insurance. The insurance industry continues to be one of the area's most important businesses with several companies using Lincoln as the center for their operations.

Lincoln's rich history and significance in the colonization of the Midwest are still apparent today. The Historic Haymarket section of the city has been preserved and renovated. The area once served as a regional trade center where farmers could congregate and market their products. This tradition is still alive today as people gather at The Farmer's Market and enjoy an eclectic mix of produce and homemade goods.

The City of Lincoln continues to be one of the fastest growing cities in the Midwest. It is an excellent place to live and work. Lincoln's economic prosperity and future growth are just a couple reasons why this is such a wonderful market. Please click on the "About Lincoln" link for further information on current demographics.
